Actos is also known by the generic name Pioglitazone, and can be prescribed to help restore blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Pioglitazone allows your body to respond naturally to insulin helping to stabilize your blood sugar. Actos can be used alongside other diabetes medications if and when they are prescribed to you.

Dosage is typically decided based on your initial diagnosis and how you respond to the treatment. A normal dose is taken orally once a day with or without food. Regular use of this medication is required to achieve the best results. It can take between two and three months to see the full effect. In that time keep track of your blood sugar levels to ensure your treatment is going as planned.

Speak to your doctor about known allergies before taking Actos as some ingredients can induce an allergic reaction. More serious side effects can also include:

anemia, liver injury, edema, bone fractures, bladder cancer, diabetic macular edema

Q: Can I use Actos while pregnant or breast feeding?

A: Your doctor may provide your insulin instead of taking Actos during a pregnancy, however, consult with your doctor about the risk of using Actos while pregnant. There is not enough medical data to know if the medication can pass into the breast milk of nursing mothers. Consult your doctor regarding the risk of taking Actos while breast feeding.
