Aldara Cream can be prescribed to treat abnormal skin growths that could be precancerous, certain types of skin cancer, and warts around the genital region. Aldara Cream contains the immune response modifier Imiquimod to help boost your immune system to decrease these abnormal skin growths.

Make sure you read all the paper work and instructions that was given to you by your pharmacist before using Aldara Cream. Wash your hands and the effected areas before apply the cream to your skin. Measure out enough of the cream to apply a thin layer on the effected areas. Apply the medication before going to bed. You should to leave the cream on for roughly 6 to 10 hours before washing it off. 

Your doctor will give you more specific instructions regarding how long you should leave the cream if you are treating warts or precancerous growths. More instructions on dosage and schedule will be provided to you by your doctor depending on your current condition and response to the treatment.

Aldara Cream may have ingredients that could induce an allergic reaction. Speak with your doctor regarding known allergies before using this medication. Additionally you should consult your doctor about prior medical conditions relating to immune system problems and autoimmune diseases. Disclose any medications or supplements you are taking to ensure there are no interactions while taking Aldara Cream.

Avoid applying the medication in sensitive areas like your eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina. If contact occurs in these sensitive areas, rinse and flush thoroughly with cold water.

Aldara Cream does not eradicate the human papillomavirus (HPV) in cases of genital warts. It only eliminates any current warts. New warts can form while being treated with Aldara Cream and could infect others through sexual activity. 

You should avoid any sexual contact while the cream is applied. The integrity of any prophylactic could be weakened by the cream and may not prevent STD's or pregnancy. Aldara Cream does not prevent the spread of HPV or any other STD's. It is important that you use the right protection when having sexual intercourse.

Using Aldara Cream may cause you be more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid sun exposure and wear protective clothing and wear sun screen on unprotected areas. It is best to not use tanning booths or sunlamps during your treatment with Aldara Cream.

Some side effects can include: treatment area reactions such as skin redness, swelling, itching, irritation, dryness, burning, pain, tenderness, thickening/hardening of the skin, peeling/flaking/scabbing/crusting, or leaking a clear fluid, changes in skin color of the treated area may occur and may not go away, headache, dizziness, chest pain, back pain, cold sores, fever blisters, cold symptoms (such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat), flu-like symptoms (such as fever, tiredness, muscle aches), nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or vaginal itching or discharge.

Q: Can I take Aldara Cream while pregnant?

A: You should consult your doctor to discuss the risk involved with taking Aldara Cream while pregnant. There is not enough medical data to know if this this medication can pass into the breast milk of a nursing mother. It is recommended to consult with your doctor before using this medication while breast feeding.

 

Q: How should I store Aldara Cream?

A: This medication is applied in the evening before bed. If you miss the dose apply the medication before you go to bed that day. The medication needs to be on the skin without being washed for 6 to 10 hours.
