Anafranil is the brand name for the generic drug Clomipramine that can be prescribed to treat obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).  Clomipramine can reduce obsessive thoughts and help reduce the need to perform redundant tasks like hand washing, repeated counting, and over checking things you have already done. Clomipramine is classified as a tricyclic antidepressant and helps balance serotonin and other chemicals in the brain. 

Anafranil is taken orally with or without food. The dose schedule can change based on instruction from your doctor. 

Anafranil can be given at low doses spaced out through the day at first. With your doctors instruction the dose can be gradually increase over time until the you reach an optimum dose. It is advised to follow your doctors directions explicitly to avoid over or under dosing during this time. Once a satisfactory dose has been reached you can take it once a day in the evening. 

Speak with your doctor about any known allergies before you starting taking Anafranil. Disclose any prior medical conditions, current medications, and any supplementation before deciding if Anafranil is a good fit for you.

This medication does not take effect right away and can take up to three weeks before you are able to feel the full effect of this medication. Do not stop taking Anafranil even if you feel better. You should only stop taking this medication if directed by your doctor. 

There is a risk of irregular heart beat (QT prolongation) while taking Clomipramine. Speak with your doctor if you have a history heart problems. 

Avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking Anafranil. There can be interactions with how the medication is absorbed in the body when you have grapefruit.

Clomipramine can make you feel dizzy, light-headed, or even blur your vision temporarily. Alcohol and Cannabis can exasperate these effects. Speak with your doctor regarding acceptable limits of these substances. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you a certain it is safe to do so.

Some some side effects can include:

dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, changes in appetite or weight, flushing, increased sweating, tiredness, blurred vision or vision changes, anxiety, restlessness, sleep problems (insomnia), memory problems, trouble concentrating, numbness or tingling, decreased sex drive, impotence, difficulty having an orgasm

More serious side effects can also include:

mental/mood changes (e.g., confusion, depression), enlarged or painful breasts, unwanted breast milk production, irregular or painful menstrual periods, muscle stiffness, ringing in the ears, shakiness (tremors), trouble urinating

Speak with your doctor if you experience any side effects that become severe during your treatment with Anafranil. If you experience any serious side effects speak with your doctor right away for medical treatment.

Q: I am taking Anafranil and I just found out I am pregnant, what do I do?

A: Speak with your doctor right away concerning the risk and benefit of using Anafranil during a pregnancy. Anafranil can pass into the breast milk of the nursing mother and effect the infant. You should also consult with your doctor on the risk associated with using Anafranl while breast feeding.

 

Q: How should I store Anafranil?

A: This should be stored at room temperature away from children and pets. Never dispose this medication in wastewater. If you are unsure of how to safely dispose unwanted or expired medications speak with your local pharmacist for disposal options.

 

Q: What happens if I miss a dose?

A: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If your missed does is close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the scheduled dose to avoid double dosing.
