Cosopt is an ophthalmic solution and can be prescribed to treat high pressure in the eye in cases of glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Cosopt contains the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor Dorzolamide and a beta blocker Timolol to help reduce the amount of fluid in the eye and to relieve eye pressure.

Read all the paper work and instructions that came with your package of Cosopt before applying the eye drops. Apply one drop to the effected eye(s) twice a day. Avoid contamination by washing your hands before administering the eye drops. Do not let the eye dropper touch your eye or any surface. Remove any contact lenses before using the eye drops and allow roughly 15 minutes before wearing your contacts again. 

If you have other eye drops medications allow five minutes between application of medications to ensure the body absorbed each medication fully

Before taking Cosopt speak with your doctor regarding known allergies as there are ingredients that induce an allergic reaction. Speak with your doctor about prior medical conditions or any condition relating to lung disease, irregular heart beat, heart disease, kidney disease, or an overactive thyroid. Disclose any medications you are taking along with any supplements to ensure there are no interactions while taking Cosopt. 

If you are struggling with diabetes it may be harder to know when your blood sugar is low while taking Cosopt. If you have diabetes check your blood sugar levels regularly to ensure a safe treatment.

You could developed blurred vision temporarily while taking Cosopt. Do not operate heavy machinery or drive a vehicle until you know it is safe to do so.

Some common side effects can include:

temporary blurred vision, cloudy vision, double vision, temporary burning/stinging/itching/redness of the eye, watery eyes, dry eyes, feeling as if something is in the eye, drooping eyelid, sensitivity of eyes to light, bitter or strange taste in the mouth, cough, flu symptoms, nausea, upset stomach, stomach pain, back pain, sore throat, stuffy nose, headache, drowsiness

More serious side effects can also include:

dizziness, slow or irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness, mental/mood changes, coldness/numbness/pain in the hands or feet

Speak with your doctor or pharmacist for help managing any side effects that become too severe during your treatment with Cosopt. If you experience any serious side effects contact your doctor for additional medical treatment.

Q: Can I take Cosopt while pregnant?

A: You should consult your doctor to discuss the risk involved with taking Cosopt while pregnant. This medication can pass into the breast milk of a nursing mother. It is recommended to consult with your doctor before using this medication while breast feeding.

 

Q: How should I store Cosopt?

A: This should be stored at room temperature away from children and pets. Never dispose this medication in wastewater. If you are unsure of how to safely dispose unwanted or expired medications speak with your local pharmacist for disposal options.

 

Q: What if I miss a dose?

A: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If your missed does is close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the scheduled dose to avoid double dosing.
