Macrodantin (Nitrofurantoin) is also known by the generic name Nitrofurantoin and be prescribed to treat and prevent urinary tract infections. Nitrofurantoin is a antibiotic and won't be useful in treating viral infections like the flu or common cold. Overuse of antibiotics like Nitrofurantoin will reduce it's effectiveness over time.

Macrodantin is taken orally up to four times a day with food and drink. Space out the time between doses evenly to get the best effect. You should continue to take this medication even if you feel better and until the prescription is complete to avoid a bacteria relapse.
