Vivelle-Dot is a transdermal system that delivers Estradiol in a multipolymeric adhesive. Estradiol is absorbed through the skin with contact of the multipolymeric adhesive. Estradiol is an estrogen steroid hormone that helps reduce symptoms of menopause like hot flashes and vaginal dryness. This medication can also be used where there is not enough estrogen is being produced by the body. 

Make sure you read all the paper work and the instructions given to you by your pharmacist before using the Vivelle-Dot. Peel the backing from the patch and apply the Vivelle-Dot to a dry and clean area of the body. Apply pressure to the patch for 10 seconds to ensure that the Vivelle-Dot bonds to the skin. Avoid placing the patch on areas of the body where the patch can be rubbed off. 

The  Vivelle-Dot should be replaced every three to four days. Avoid placing the patch in the same spot and allow at least a week before placing the Vivelle-Dot on the same spot again. To avoid complications do not wear more than one patch at any given time. 

If for any reason the patch becomes loose or falls of the body, replace it for the duration of the scheduled dose. When switching patches remove the old patch and fold it in half allowing the adhesive to stick together. This can be disposed of in the dry trash making sure to avoid contact with children and pets. 

When in doubt, contact your doctor or pharmacist to ensure you using the patch properly to get the best results from the Vivelle-Dot.

Speak with your doctor regarding known allergies as Estradiol could induce an allergic reaction. Go over prior medical conditions or any medication you are currently using to ensure that there are no complications during your treatment with the Vivelle-Dot. 

Avoid smoking tobacco while using the Vivelle-Dot. Smoking can increase the risk of stroke, blood clots, high blood pressure and heart attacks in woman older than 35. 

Because there could be substances that effect the skin while in an MRI machine, remove the Vivelle-Dot if you are taking an MRI test. Re apply a new patch after the test making sure to replace it at the next scheduled dose. 

It may be difficult to wear contact lenses due to irritation in the eyes. Vision problems may also occur while being treated with Vivelle-Dot. Speak to your doctor on ways to manage this side effects.

Your skin can become sensitive to sunlight and become prone to melasma (dark areas on the skin) while using Vivelle-Dot. Avoid tanning booths sun exposure when possible. Wear sun screen on areas that cannot be covered with protective clothing.

Some side effects can include:

skin redness/irritation at the application site, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, constipation, bloating, breast swelling and tenderness, nipple discharge, headache, back pain, joint pain, weight changes, acne, skin color changes, increased facial hair, thinning scalp hair, cold symptoms (stuffy nose, sneezing, sinus pain, sore throat), changes in your menstrual periods, break-through bleeding

More serious side effects can also include:

mental/mood changes (such as depression, memory loss), breast lumps, unusual vaginal bleeding (such as spotting, breakthrough bleeding), increased or new vaginal irritation/itching/odor/discharge, severe stomach or abdominal pain, persistent nausea or vomiting, yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine, swelling hands/ankles/feet, increased thirst or urination.

If any side effects become to severe during treatment, consult with your doctor on ways to manage these side effects. Speak with your doctor if you experience and serious effects to ensure proper and safe treatment.

Q: If the Vivelle-Dot comes off, do I replace with a new one? 

A: Yes, replace the patch with a new one for the duration of the dose. Replace the patch at your next scheduled dose even if the replacement patch has been used for a short period. This is to ensure you get the correct and consistent dose over the course of 3-4 days. When you take off the patch fold it so that both adhesive sides touch, and then dispose in dry waste. 

 

Q: Can I use the Vivelle-Dot while pregnant or breast feeding?

A: No this should not be used during a pregnancy, and the medication can also pass into breast milk of the nursed child. Speak with your doctors on the risk of using the Vivelle-Dot while breast feeding.  

 

Q: How should I store these patches?

A: Vivelle-Dot's should be stored at room temperature and should be kept away from children and pets. If there are questions regarding the proper method of disposal, contact a local pharmacist to ensure you are safely disposing of the patches.
