Vytorin is a medication that contains both Ezetimibe and Simvastatin to reduce the absorption of unwanted cholesterol in your diet, and helps to reduce the amount of cholesterol generated by the liver. Vytorin works by reducing bad cholesterol such as LDL and triglycerides and allows for good balance of healthy cholesterol like HDL in the body.

Vytorin is taken once a day with or without food. The dose can vary based on the initial diagnoses and the response to treatment. It is important to remain on the same dose and only make changes with the advice of your doctor. Take care to read the paper work and instructions given to you by your pharmacist, and follow any explicit instructions given to you by your doctor.

A major component of an effective treatment with Vytorin is a life style change to include a healthy diet and exercise. Work within the advice given to you by doctor to make the right changes to your life style.

Vytorin can take up to four weeks to reach the maximum effect, and should be taken regularly to ensure proper treatment. Continue to take Vytorin even if you feel better.

Ezetimibe and Simvastatin can induce allergic reactions, make sure your doctor is aware of your current allergies to avoid unwanted reactions. Before starting treatment with Vytorin speak with your doctor about prior medical conditions and disclose any medication, non prescription drugs, vitamins or supplements you may be taking to avoid complications. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice as it can reduce the effectiveness of Vytorin.

If you are taking cholestyramine or colestipol allow at least two to four hours before taking Vytorin. If you are taking other cholesterol medication spacing out your doses in this way can prevent negative interactions.

Drinking alcohol while taking Vytorin can increase liver disease. Speak with your doctor about your history with alcohol use, liver disease, and kidney disease. Limit or avoid alcohol and speak with your doctor about the acceptable limits while taking Vytorin

Some side effects can include:

headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, abnormal liver tests

If any side effects become severe, speak with your doctor or pharmacist for help in managing these side effects.

Q: Can I take Vytorin while pregnant or breast feeding?

A: You should not take Vytorin while pregnant as it can effect the unborn baby. There is not enough medical data to know if Vytorin can pass into breast milk while nursing. Speak with your doctor on the risks of taking Vytorin while breast feeding.

Q: How do I store Vytorin?

A: This medication is stored at room temperature, and should be kept away from children and pets. Dispose of this medication if it is unwanted or has expired. Do not dispose of this medication in wastewater. Speak with a local pharmacist if you have questions on safely disposing of this medication.

Q: I have surgery coming up, should I still be on Vytorin?

A: Speak with your doctor about the severity of the surgery and discuss any and all prescriptions drugs you are taking prior to surgery. This will ensure that the doctor is able to make a safe recommendation regarding how your prescriptions will work throughout the surgery and during recovery.
