Synthroid (levothyroxine) is an oral med used in place of or to increase thyroid hormone which is usually produced by the thyroid gland. Thyroid levels are essential to partake in mental and physical activity. Levothyroxine can also be used to treat other thyroid related diseases. 

Always follow your doctors instructions while taking Synthroid.

  • Taken by mouth as directed, usually once a day
  • Empty stomach usually before 1 hour before breakfast
  • Children may take the tablet mixed with 2 spoons of water
  • Take the capsule version whole
  • To see the most benefits, take this medication regularly

Before using Synthroid, speak to your pharmacist or doctor about:

  • A very serious allergic reaction
  • Symptoms of high thyroid levels such as seizures, increased sweating, mood changes, diarrhea, bone pain, irregular heartbeat, swelling in the hands, ankles, or feet

If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, immediately tell your doctor or pharmacist.

 

Q: What happens if I take Levothyroxine on a full stomach instead of empty?

A: The absorption of the drug will be affected so it's reccommended you take it on an empty stomach

 

Q: How long should I wait to have breakfast after taking Levothyroxine?

A: At least 30 minutes to an hour before having a meal or liquids other than coffee.

 

Q: Can I atleast have some coffee if I can't eat breakfast after taking Levothyroxine?

A: Coffee within 1 hour of taking Levothyroxine affects your absorption of the med.
